DIY Newspaper Rose Gift Bows

Do you buy the Sunday newspaper? Do you get it for the coupons? How about you repurpose the Comics section to make some cute paper roses?!

Making roses out of paper, tissue paper, and fabric is nothing new. There are already some amazing creations such as a wreath made with paper roses and paper rose arrangements.

The kids and I recently wrapped a birthday present using a brown paper bag. It was a gift being given to my twins preschool friend. My daughter wanted to draw on it and make it her own special gift wrap creation. I thought it would be neat to put some bows on it by making paper roses using the Sunday Comics. The words and colors of that section make the roses look really cool (I think).

As you can see in the picture at the top of this post I made 3 roses. 1 medium sized and 2 smaller ones. I also cut out 2 leaves.

Here’s what you need to do:

Draw a circle and if needed also draw a spiral within it as a outline. I personally like to free-hand cut spirals into my circles. Cut you circle and it’s spiral. The thickness of the spiral depends on how full you want the rose. The thicker it is the less full your rose will be.

Start rolling the spiral tightly together starting from the outside. Keep rolling until you get to the end. When you are done rolling let go and you’ll see it formed into a rose! It may look a little “tight”. You can “fluff” it out a bit with your fingers.

To secure the rose together, turn it over and placed double sided tape. You could use glue. Doubled sided tape was strong enough for this project since the newspaper is lightweight and my roses are small. I pressed on the bottom to secure. I then turned it over and pressed again.

And because I am a tester I also turned it upside and shook it.

Here’s the entire wrapped present. I made the roses small so there was plenty of room for my daughter’s masterpiece drawing. 🙂

And since we are talking about homemade gift bows, here’s another bow I made with my oldest daughter. We used a magazine page for it. You can read about a DIY recycled magazine paper bow tutorial HERE.

Have you made any homemade gift bows?

  23. I also found that you can randomly make cuts in the rose, once it is formed, and it seperates the paper to make it seem as though there are actually petals, we did this with an old yellow receipt…Reminds us of Spring!!!
