DIY: Personalized Map Art – Life is a Journey

MapDecorFull

There are many DIY map-related projects around the internet such as wall décor and coasters. My map décor is comparatively small and simple. I like doing and showing you projects that are easy to make.

I especially love personalized projects like my recent vacation memory vase. So, I personalized this map print. My map themed inspiration came from projects where a vacation spot or where a couple met was highlighted.

My map print shows you where my husband grew up, where I grew up, where we met and where we currently live. I also added the words “Life is a Journey” to it. This map shows our journey to each other and to where we are raising our kids now.

The materials I used for this map project were a page from a World Atlas, a 5×7 frame, pencil, scissors and a printer.

How I made my Map Décor – Here’s my Tutorial:

I recently found an old World Atlas at my mom’s former home (I say former because she recently moved). The atlas is from the 1970s. This atlas is in my possession now. Maybe someday I’ll repurpose more map pages from it.

For this project, I first picked a map I wanted to use. I focused on the eastern part of the United States that would fit into a 5×7 frame. As I stated above, this map project highlights where my husband grew up, where I grew up, where we met and where we currently live. Those places are in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

I used my picture frame’s glass to line up and trace the part of the map I wanted to cut.

I was going to free hand write the words “Life is a Journey” on the map. Instead, I used Microsoft Word and printed it directly on the map. I did a few practice prints on regular paper first to make sure it was sized and lined up correctly. I love how the printed words look like it was originally part of the map. You could write the words free hand, use stickers or cut vinyl letters. Do whatever works best for you.

The last thing I did was draw stars on our significant places with a brown colored pencil. I also placed lines from where we each grew up to where we met. I then drew a line from where we met to where we live now.

I love how this framed print shows our journey via a map.

What do you think of using maps as wall and home decor?
