DIY: Swirly Pumpkin and Leaf Garland (Paper Craft)

SwirlyPumkinGarlandCloseMirrorView

If you’ve been following my DIY/craft adventures, then you know I love creating things with paper. I have done several paper garland projects for holidays such as my Valentine’s Day Paper Heart Garland and Easter Egg and Flower garland. I even made Mini Paper Lanterns for the summer. My latest garland is made up of leaves and fun pumpkins to celebrate the fall season.

It currently hangs on a mirror above my family room mantle. I LOVE it! The Swirly Pumpkin and Leaf Garland adds a nice festive autumn look to my mantle décor .

The materials I used for this project were orange cardstock paper, brown cardstock paper, printed scrapbook paper, straight edge cutter, pencil, glue, leaf template, scissors, ribbon and mini clothespins.

Want to know how to make this fall garland?! Here’s the tutorial?

Each pumpkin is made with 2 orange strips and 1 small brown strip. The orange strips are cardstock paper that I cut 12 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. The brown piece is cardstock paper that I cut 1 1/4 (1.25) inch long and 1/2 inch wide.

On one orange strip, I drew a line with a pencil 3 inches down. I rolled (quilled) the orange strip until I reached the pencil mark. I rolled it out a bit so it made a small swirl.

For the small brown strips, I marked with a pencil 1/2 inch down. I folded/bent the stems at that mark.

I placed the stem lined up against the marked line on my orange strip and glued it. I then took the other end of the orange strip and glued on top of brown stem. You now have a paper pumpkin….with one small swirl. I also made a slight bend where the stem is to give some shape to the pumpkin.

Next, I rolled (using a pencil) the second orange paper strip all the way to the end. The paper will have a tight roll right after you finish. I pulled it out to loosen it. I loosened it enough to fit into the right side of the pumpkin. See pictures below.

I then placed glue on the right inside of the pumpkin and secured the swirly orange strip.

The leaves were made using two leaf templates. One slightly bigger than the other. The bottom layer is dark brown cardstock paper. The top layer is scrapbook paper I found at Michaels. I love how the scrapbook paper has fall-theme words. The templates’ shape was based on a leaf from my Spray Painted Fall Wreath. I traced the leaves using the templates and cut them out. I glued the pattered scrapbook paper leaf on top of the brown cardstock paper. I bent each leaf to give it dimension.

If you look closely at the picture, then you’ll notice I hung the leaves and pumpkins using mini clothespins. It adds a nice touch to this beautiful garland.
