Freezer Friday: Chili and Ground Turkey


My latest freezer cooking session was spent making Chili and cooking ground turkey. I had already plan to make Chili for our dinner than night. I figured I might as well make double the Chili and freeze it. I also then thought I should go ahead and cook up some extra batches of ground turkey.

You may recall I like to cook chicken in bulk and ground turkey in bulk and then freeze it. This is an example of how I make future dinner prep faster and easier. I like having the flexibility of having just the meat cooked. I have the option to make different meals. Having at least one part of the cooking process done makes it easier to throw a meal together.

Back to my cooking…

I first cooked four (4) 1-lb packs of ground turkey. I was able to cook 2 at a time using two pans. After the first two was done, I let it cool and went on to cook the remaining 2 packs of ground turkey.

I made a homemade chili seasoning mix at some point while the ground turkey was browning. The Chili Seasoning Mix is a recipe I found many years ago and don’t recall the source. Here’s the recipe.


Chili Seasoning Mix Recipe


  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1-1/2 to 3 tbsp chili powder NOTE: Adjust to how spicy you want it. 3 tbsp is very spicy to me but my husband loves it this way. I recently made it using 2 tbsp. You may want to start out at 1-1/2 tbsp and adjust from there.
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp dried minced onion or 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp dried minced garlic or 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin

Mix all ingredients. Store in air tight container if not using right away.


After all 4 packs of ground turkey was cooked, I placed 2 of them into freezer bags and labeled them.

I then I got started on my Chili. I made two sets of Chili at the same time. Meaning, I had two pots of Chili cooking.

When all was done, I had the following ready to freeze:

  • 1 container of cooked Chili
  • 2 1-lb bags of cooked ground turkey

And don’t forget the other pot of Chili was that night’s dinner. 🙂 Chili recipe below.


Turkey Chili Recipe

  • 1-lb ground turkey
  • Chili Seasoning Mix Recipe (see recipe above)
  • 1 can of dark red kidney beans
  • 1-1/2 cans of tomato sauce

Brown the ground turkey. Add in chili seasoning mix. Stir in dark red kidney beans. Pour in tomato sauce. (Note: At this point, you can add in anything else that you want to personalize the recipe such as peppers, diced tomatoes, etc.). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Simmer for 20 minutes.
