Homemade Chocolate Syrup Recipe

I am continuing my efforts to cook things from scratch. This time CHOCOLATE is involved. Did I get your attention or maybe the picture above did?

Here’s a recipe to make Homemade Chocolate Syrup. You can use it to make chocolate milk or as a topping on your favorite ice cream.

I sampled this chocolate syrup many times on it’s own and in milk. I even compared it with store bought Chocolate Syrup. I took it a step further and had my husband do a taste test.  He tasted both syrups without knowing which was homemade. We both agreed they tasted the same. The only difference is the homemade chocolate syrup is thicker.

The recipe I used is adapted from one I found on FoodNetwork.com. I used less sugar because I ran out. I had just enough to equal 2.5 cups of sugar. I also did not add any corn syrup.


Homemade Chocolate Syrup Recipe

1 1/2 cups water
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt

In a medium size pot, mix the cocoa powder and the water. Heat and stir to dissolve the cocoa. Add the sugar and whisk to dissolve. Boil for for about 3 minutes over medium heat. Watch it to make sure it doesn’t get too hot and boil over.

Remove from heat and add the salt and the vanilla. Let cool. Store in the refrigerator.


I’m not sure how much syrup this recipe makes. It was a lot. FoodNetwork.com says 5 cups. NOTE: You may want to store the syrup in a squeeze bottle. I currently have some in a syrup dispenser as shown in this post’s top picture. I stored the rest in a tupperware container. I hope to eventually store them in squeeze bottles (which I need to purchase).

  4. Any idea how long this will keep? I have a 3-year-old chocolate milk addict:)

    • My son is a chocolate milk addict 🙂 I’m not sure how long it will keep. We have about 3/4 cup left from a batch I made over 2 weeks ago and it’s still fine.
