Christmas Tree Brownies

Yesterday, I told you about mini reindeer donuts. Today, I have another fun holiday treat to show you – Christmas Tree Brownies. We shared this sweet dessert with my oldest daughter’s classroom to celebrate her birthday.

ChristmasTreeBrowniesFinale

I baked my homemade brownies. I cut the brownies into triangles. NOTE: I was able to get clean lines by cutting the brownies using a plastic knife while it was still warm in the pan. A plastic knife makes a big difference versus using a regular knife.  A great tip I found on TheFrugalGirls.com.

After the brownies were completely cool,  I decorated them using Wilton Cookie icing – Green, mini red M&M’s as ornaments and mini yellow M&M’s as the stars.

Mini Reindeer Donuts

I had so much fun making these Mini Reindeer Donuts. Aren’t they cute? They are an easy-to-make Christmas treat.

ReindeerDonutsFinale

Last year, I made Mini Snowman Donuts for a birthday snack for my twins’ classroom. They wanted a similar treat this year. I remembered all the cute Reindeer shaped treat ideas I posted previously. We decided on the mini reindeer donuts (seen on Free-N-Fun Christmas).

ReindeerDonutsMaterials

I used Wilton Candy Eyeballs. The antlers are made out of pretzels. I found using alphabet pretzels, specifically the letters “Y”, “T”, “F” and “J” work great. The noses are red M&Ms. I used Wilton Tube Decorating Gel – Brown to keep the eyes, noses and antlers in place on the chocolate donuts.

DIY: Christmas Wreath Trio

Instead of hanging one Christmas Wreath on our door, I hung up three.

ChristmasDoorWreaths

I originally made and hung up this holiday wreath trio last year but I didn’t get around to posting about it. The wreaths are up again this year. It was inspired by Martha Stewart’s Blue Spruce Wreath Trio.

I attached the wreaths using red-white striped ribbon and staples.

ChristmasDoorWreathBack

I also attached a bow on the top wreath. I love the way it looks.

DIY: Christmas Holiday Mantle Display

Our Christmas decorations are up and our house is filled with holiday cheer. Christmas music and hot chocolate are also involved.
ChristmasMirror2012

My two favorite items to decorate during the holiday season are the Christmas tree and our family room mantle.

You may remember, I had a Rolled Paper Christmas Wreath above my mantle last year. This year I wanted a change and hung up a different wreath. I created a new wreath using small snowflake ornaments and berry picks. All items were purchased at Michaels Store. I love how the colors of the wreath pop and match the rest of our holiday mantle décor. The white, red and light green colors displayed all over our mantle is merry and bright.

ChristmasMantle

Two familiar DIY projects on the mantle are the Christmas Scrabble Art and Christmas Ornament Shadow Box Display.

One of my favorite parts of the display are the ribbon-wrapped shutters. All I did was wrap the shutters like a present using red ribbon. You could wrap french doors or even cabinet doors.

ChristmasRibbonTag

I also attached gift tags labeled “Merry” and “Christmas” to add a festive touch. This idea was inspired by Better Homes and Gardens Ribbon-Wrapped Doors.

Snowman Mini Donuts

SnowmanMiniDonutsTheFinale

I told you about 7 reindeer shaped treat ideas last week. This list included reindeer mini donuts. Did you know you could also make some cute Snowman Mini Donuts ? I found this idea on Free Fun Christmas.

Snowman Mini Donuts could be served as a fun Christmas or wintertime snack. You can serve it at a winter or snowman themed party. I recently made them for my twins’ birthday. We shared them as a birthday snack for their class.

All you need to make these Snowman Mini Donuts are mini powdered donuts, mini chocolate chips, orange candy and white frosting. The orange candy is for the nose. I used orange Mike and Ike Candies. You could use an M&M, Skittle, or candy corn. Stick the orange candy into the hole of the mini powdered donut. The mini chocolate chips are for the eyes and mouth.

SnowmanMiniDonutsIngredients

Use the frosting to adhere the mini chocolate chips to the donut. I did have some minor issues adhering the chocolate chips to the donuts. The small size of the chocolate chips was tricky to handle and sometimes they would not adhere because there was too much powder on the donuts. Overall, I was happy I made these fun treats even with the minor issue.

Snowman Mini Donuts make a sweet whimsical winter treat! I’ll definitely make them again.

Chocolate Saltine Toffee Bars

ChocolateSaltineToffeeBarsFinale

Many people already know about this sweet treat – Chocolate Saltine Toffee Bars. I made it for the first time this year. Some people call it Saltine Toffee Candy or Saltine Toffee Cookies or Toffee Cracker Bars. Whatever name you give them, there’s a good chance you’ll say they are delicious, maybe even addicting.

I have made turtle bars in the past which are somewhat similar because of the toffee middle and chocolate topping. The big difference is the saltines. Chocolate Saltine Toffee Bars are so easy to prepare. All you need are saltine crackers, butter, brown sugar and chocolate.

******

Chocolate Saltine Toffee Crackers Recipe (adapted – several recipes can be found online such as this one here.)

Ingredients
Saltine Crackers (about 1 sleeve) – I used salted ones.
1 cup butter (2 sticks) – I used unsalted butter.
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups (12oz) chocolate chips.

Heat oven to 400 degrees.

Line a cookie sheet with foil. (Most recipes call for a jelly roll pan, but I did not have one. The cookie sheet worked fine for me.) Place saltine crackers (salt side up) on pan in a single layer. Melt butter with brown sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and continue to boil for 3 minutes. Stir as needed. Pour over crackers. Make sure to spread it so it covers all crackers.

Bake in oven for 5 minutes. Take out of oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly on top. Wait about 3- 5 minutes for the chocolate chips to be soft and melted.

Spread the chocolate with a spatula. Place in refrigerator for about 2 hours so chocolate hardens.

Cut or just break into pieces. You do not have to cut these into perfect squares. Chocolate Saltine Toffee Bars look fine and taste great even when irregularly broken. ;)

NOTE: You could sprinkle nuts or toffee bits to the top after spreading chocolate.

My husband wasn’t sure what to think when he saw me lining my pan with saltine crackers. He was pleasantly surprised at how yummy these Chocolate Saltine Toffee Bars tasted. I also recently took some to a holiday party. I am happy to report they were a hit (especially to those who had never had Saltine Toffee Bars).

Are these an annual holiday treat in your house?

DIY: Sparkly Snow Scene Ornaments

SparklySnowSceneOrnamentsShelf

I am excited to share some Sparkly Snow Scene Ornaments with you. Two of these ornaments used to be small jewelry gift boxes. One of them use to be a Johnson & Johnson First Aid To Go kit container. Talk about recycling and repurposing boxes.

I was initially inspired by my friend Kerry from Totally Target. I am extremely grateful for Kerry because she has shared some of my DIY projects with her readers. She recently told me how she helped her son’s pre-school class by giving them Johnson & Johnson First Aid To Go Travel Size Kits. The class used the deeper part of the kit’s box to make diorama ornaments. If you are a couponer, then chances are you familiar with these kits. You may have several of them and you probably got them for free (using coupons). I had 3 of them in my stock supply.

SparklySnowSceneOrnamentsJnJKit

Anyways, I imagine the diorama ornaments they made were wonderfully fun and bright. I personally love cheery Christmas colors as seen in my previous Christmas projects.

For this project, though, my thoughts leaned towards making something shiny, sparkly and snowy. This season I have seen some pretty DIY waterless snow globe projects. My Sparkly Snow Scene Ornaments were inspired by both diorama ornaments and waterless snow globes.

8 Handprint Christmas Kids Crafts: Wreath, Tree, Reindeer, Snowman, Santa

A child’s handprint artwork and ornaments are great keepsake crafts. You can give them as a gift to grandparents and other loved ones.

I remember when a friend of mine made the cutest paper wreath using her daughter’s handprint as a template. She told me there were all sorts of Christmas kid projects you could do using their handprints. This conversation occurred over 5 years ago when my oldest daughter was a toddler. I did at the time make one with my daughter. I planned to take a picture of it today to show you in this post. Unfortunately, I can not find it. I’m sure it’s somewhere. I just have to keep looking.

Anyways, above is an example of a Handprint Christmas Wreath from Domestic in the City. It’s made out of felt but a paper one would look great also.

Listed below are other cute Handprint Christmas Craft ideas. Make a reindeer, a Christmas Tree, a snowman and/or Santa.
